Hiking in Aspen: what to know
Aspen has more world-class hiking per square mile than anywhere else in Colorado. The Maroon Bells (the most photographed mountains in North America), the Conundrum Hot Springs (the highest hot springs in the country), the Four Pass Loop (Colorado's iconic 25-mile backpack), and dozens of high-alpine lakes are all within an hour of downtown.
The catch is access. From mid-May through October, you can't drive to Maroon Lake during the day. You'll need a reserved parking spot (very limited) or a shuttle from Aspen Highlands, both booked through recreation.gov 1-2 weeks ahead. Conundrum Hot Springs requires an overnight permit ($10 per person per night, also recreation.gov, fills 3-4 weeks ahead in summer).
Cathedral Lake is the local favorite that doesn't require permits. The 5.6-mile round trip climbs 2,000 feet to a stunning 12,000-foot lake under Cathedral Peak. Brutal switchbacks but worth it.
For a town hike, the Hunter Creek Trail starts within walking distance of downtown Aspen and climbs through aspen forest to a high meadow with Aspen Mountain views. American Lake and the Grottos are easier options on Independence Pass.
Aspen weather: summer afternoon thunderstorms are reliable July through August. Start by 7 AM for any above-treeline destination. The town stays cool even in summer (60s during the day, 30s at night), so layers matter.
Fall colors peak around the second week of September and the town gets very busy. The aspens around Maroon Lake and Castle Creek are the most photogenic.
In winter, most of these trails become backcountry ski tours. Aspen Cross-Country Center grooms tracks in town for nordic skiing, and the Conundrum Hot Springs trail is a snow route for experienced winter backpackers.
