Conundrum Peak is the 14,060-foot summit half a mile north of Castle Peak, connected by a short Class 2 ridge, and it is left off the ranked list because it rises less than 300 feet above the saddle between them. It is not the same place as Conundrum Hot Springs, which sits in a different valley. Nearly everyone climbs it as a 30-minute addition to Castle.
Standard Route
Follow the Castle Peak route: from the 2WD parking on Castle Creek Road at about 9,800 feet, walk or drive the Montezuma Basin 4WD road to the basin, then climb Castle's northeast ridge, Class 2+, to the summit at 14,279 feet. From Castle, descend the northwest ridge about 450 feet to the Castle-Conundrum saddle and climb a short Class 2 slope to Conundrum's summit. Return over the saddle; most parties descend Castle's north side or the ridge rather than re-climbing Castle. From the 2WD parking the day is about 14 miles and 4,900 feet; from the upper 4WD parking it is less than half that.
What to Expect
The traverse is easy and the exposure is mild, with one short section of loose rock below Conundrum's top. The Conundrum Couloir, the snow gully that drops from the saddle into Montezuma Basin, is the direct line in early summer for people with an axe and crampons and is not the walking route. Castle's ridge is the harder part of the day, and Conundrum's summit looks back at it well.
Access & Logistics
From Aspen, drive Castle Creek Road about 13 miles to the Pearl Pass road junction, where passenger cars park. High-clearance 4WD vehicles continue up the Montezuma Basin road, which gets rough quickly; strong 4WD rigs reach about 12,800 feet in the basin. No fee or permit for day use.
When to Climb
Late June through September. Montezuma Basin holds a permanent snowfield that the standard route crosses below Castle's ridge; microspikes help into August. Afternoon storms are near daily in July and August, and the Castle-Conundrum ridge is a long way above the basin; be on Conundrum by mid-morning.
Camping, Permits, and Nearby
Dispersed camping in Montezuma Basin is allowed above the wilderness boundary under Maroon Bells-Snowmass rules; lower on Castle Creek Road, camping is limited to designated sites. Aspen has every service and is 40 minutes from the 2WD parking. The Castle Peak guide on this site covers the ridge in detail. Gear Notes
Helmet for Castle's ridge, microspikes for the snowfield, poles, and two to three liters of water. An ice axe if you plan the couloir.
