Hiking in Steamboat Springs: what to know

Steamboat hiking has a different feel than the rest of Colorado. The Park Range and Flat Tops are rounder and greener than the San Juans or the Sawatch, with more wildflower meadows, more aspen groves, and fewer of the jagged 13,000-foot ridgelines you get further south. The trade-off is that there are no 14ers within a reasonable drive, so the locals here are wildflower people, not summit people.

Fish Creek Falls is the iconic local hike. The lower falls are a 0.5-mile walk from the paid trailhead lot ($5 day-use fee, fills by 9 AM in summer). The upper falls trail continues another 2.5 miles into the Mount Zirkel Wilderness and dead-ends at Long Lake. Spring snowmelt in May and June makes the falls thunder; by late August the flow drops to a trickle.

Rabbit Ears Peak (on Rabbit Ears Pass, 25 minutes east of town) is the area's signature ridge walk: 4.7 miles round trip to the volcanic plug formation that gives the pass its name. The trail is non-technical and good for kids past the halfway point.

Mount Werner is reachable two ways: hike the Mountain Run trail from Steamboat Resort base (4 miles, 2,200 feet of gain) or ride the gondola up and hike around at the top. The gondola runs daily in summer.

The Mount Zirkel Wilderness, north of town, has the area's bigger backcountry days. Three Island Lake (8 miles round trip) and Gilpin Lake Loop (10 miles round trip) are the local classics. Trailheads are 45 minutes from Steamboat on a dirt road that gets washboarded in summer.

The Flat Tops Wilderness, southwest of town via Yampa, contains some of Colorado's most underrated backpacking. Devil's Causeway is the area's signature day hike: a narrow knife-edge ridge at 11,800 feet, 10 miles round trip. Not for anyone uncomfortable with exposure.

Steamboat summer afternoons bring less reliable thunderstorms than the high San Juans, but they still happen. Start before 7 AM for anything above treeline. Fall colors peak the third week of September with some of the densest aspen stands in Colorado. Winter shifts everything to nordic skiing and snowshoeing; the Steamboat Ski Touring Center grooms 35 km of trails along the river.
