Best Hikes Near Pueblo, Colorado
Pueblo is the low, warm end of the Front Range at 4,700 feet, with its own foothills park in the Wet Mountains, the Arkansas River through downtown, and the Colorado Springs classics 45 minutes up I-25.
Manitou Incline
One of Colorado's most famous workouts. Roughly 2,768 railroad-tie steps gain 2,000 feet in under a mile on the old cable railway bed. A free online reservation is required year-round. Descend via Barr Trail to complete the loop.
Perkins Central Garden Trail
The paved 1.1-mile loop at the heart of Garden of the Gods. Wheelchair and stroller accessible, with the closest views of the Cathedral Spires, Three Graces, and Sleeping Giant formations.
Pueblo Mountain Park Trail
Closed since the July 2026 Aspen Acres Fire while the City of Pueblo assesses the damage. A mountain park trail network through ponderosa pine forests and open meadows with views of the Sangre de Cristo Range and Arkansas River valley.
Barr Trail
The classic 13-mile foot-trail from Manitou Springs to the summit of Pikes Peak. Climbs through ponderosa forest, past Barr Camp at the midpoint (a popular overnight stop), into the high alpine, and up to the 14,115-foot summit. The longest standard-route 14er trail in Colorado.
Hiking in Pueblo: what to know
The local hike in normal years is Pueblo Mountain Park in Beulah, 30 minutes southwest on Colorado 78, 600 acres of ponderosa and rock in the Wet Mountain foothills with a loop system above Devils Canyon. The Aspen Acres Fire burned through it in July 2026, destroying historic buildings, and the City of Pueblo has closed the park until the damage is assessed and rebuilt; no reopening date has been set.
The same fire burned more than 100,000 acres of the Wet Mountains west of Beulah, Rye, and Colorado City, the country around Lake Isabel, the St. Charles Peak trail, and Greenhorn Mountain, and the Forest Service closure on the San Isabel National Forest east of Colorado 165 runs through December 31, 2026. Check the Pike-San Isabel National Forest alerts page before planning anything in the Wet Mountains this year; Bishop Castle, the hand-built stone castle on 165, reopened with the highway in August.
Closer to home, Lake Pueblo State Park has 20 miles of trail along the reservoir and the Arkansas River Trail runs from the dam into downtown; both need a state parks pass at the lake. The Pueblo Riverwalk is the after-dinner stroll.
Colorado Springs is close enough that Pueblo hikers treat it as local. The Manitou Incline and Barr Trail start in Manitou Springs, 50 minutes north, and Garden of the Gods is 10 minutes past that. The Incline needs a free timed reservation.
Pueblo summers are hot, with highs in the mid-90s, so the low trails are a dawn or evening activity from June through August and at their best from March to May and September to November. Winter is mild enough that the river trails and Mountain Park stay open. Pueblo has every service and the cheapest lodging on the Front Range.
