Hiking in Buena Vista: what to know

Buena Vista is the southern hub for the Collegiate Peaks. The town has the river running through it, a strong rafting and climbing scene, and direct access to Mount Princeton, Mount Yale, Mount Columbia, Mount Harvard, and Mount Antero. Most of what gets done here involves long approaches and 4,000-plus feet of gain.

Mount Princeton (14,197 feet) is the visible classic, the peak you can see from downtown. The standard route from the radio towers trailhead is 6.5 miles round trip with 3,200 feet of gain, but the road to the upper trailhead is notoriously rough; most hikers add 3 miles each way by parking at the lower lot. Class 2, no exposure. A reasonable first 14er for fit hikers staying at altitude.

Mount Yale (14,200 feet) is the local favorite for first-timers: 9.5 miles round trip with 4,300 feet of gain from the Denny Creek Trailhead on Cottonwood Pass Road. Less brutal than Mount Princeton's road approach.

Cottonwood Pass (12,126 feet) is the gateway to the western Collegiates. The Ptarmigan Lake Trail (6.4 miles round trip, 1,500 feet of gain) starts on the pass and accesses a high alpine lake without requiring a summit push. Great acclimatization hike.

Mount Princeton Hot Springs (8 miles south of town on CR 162) is the standard post-hike soak. The riverside pools are free; the resort pools cost $30. Either way, hot soak after a 14er day is a Buena Vista tradition.

For shorter local hikes, the Midland Trail and the Whipple Trail along the Arkansas River provide easy in-town walking with good views of the Collegiates across the valley.

Browns Creek Falls (7 miles round trip, 1,600 feet of gain) is the area's best waterfall hike, climbing through aspen and pine to a 35-foot cascade. Best in June with peak snowmelt.

The Collegiate Peaks Wilderness contains the area's bigger backcountry days. The Lake Ann basin and Three Apostles area are the local backpacking classics, accessed via a long approach from the Winfield trailhead.

Weather: Buena Vista summers are warmer and drier than the high mountain towns. Afternoon thunderstorms above treeline are reliable July through August; start before 6 AM for any 14er attempt.
