Mount Massive is Colorado's second-highest peak at 14,428 feet, just 12 feet shorter than neighboring Mount Elbert. It earns its name — the summit ridge is over three miles long and contains five named summits, all above 14,000 feet (only the highest counts officially).

Standard Route

The East Slopes route starts at the Mount Massive Trailhead on Halfmoon Creek Road, sharing the access road with Mount Elbert. From 10,100 feet, the trail climbs steadily through dense forest before emerging onto open tundra around 12,500 feet. The final climb gains 4,500 feet over 7 miles round trip.

What to Expect

The east slopes feel relentless — there's almost no flat ground between the trailhead and the summit. Bring patience and pace yourself. The summit ridge is broad and exposed; in poor weather it's easy to lose your bearings on the way down.

Access & Logistics

Halfmoon Creek Road is passable by 2WD to the trailhead in summer. Mount Massive Wilderness regulations apply — no dogs above the wilderness boundary.
