Windom Peak is part of the Chicago Basin trio (Windom, Sunlight, Eolus) — three of the most remote 14ers in Colorado, accessed via the Durango & Silverton railroad train.
Standard Route
From the Chicago Basin camp, the standard route climbs Windom's west ridge through class 2 terrain to the summit. Most climbers stay multiple days in Chicago Basin and bag all three peaks. Total trip from train drop-off: 17 miles round trip, 5,800 feet of gain spread across multiple days.
What to Expect
The train approach is part of the adventure. Camp in Chicago Basin and plan 2-3 days to climb all three peaks. Mountain goats are habituated to people in the basin — keep food and salty gear secured.
