Uncompahgre Peak is the highest peak in the San Juan Mountains at 14,309 feet and one of the most-summited San Juan 14ers due to its accessible 4WD road approach and non-technical standard route.
Standard Route
The standard route starts at the Nellie Creek Trailhead (a 4WD-only access road from Lake City). From 11,500 feet, a well-defined trail climbs through tundra and along the south ridge to the summit. 7.5 miles round trip, 3,000 feet of gain.
What to Expect
Nellie Creek Road is genuinely 4WD — clearance and aggressive tires matter. Without a capable vehicle, you'll add several miles each way from the lower trailhead. The summit views span the entire San Juan range.
