Best Hikes Near Leadville, Colorado
Leadville is the highest incorporated city in North America at 10,152 feet, providing the closest access to Mount Elbert (Colorado's highest peak) and the Sawatch Range 14ers.

Mount Elbert
Colorado's highest peak offers a challenging but non-technical climb with incredible panoramic views. The standard East Ridge route is the most popular approach.
Mount Massive (Southwest Slopes)
Colorado's second-highest peak via the Colorado Trail approach from the Mount Massive Trailhead. Long, sustained climb through forest to alpine tundra and a broad summit ridge. Less crowded than Elbert across the valley.

La Plata Peak (Northwest Ridge)
Colorado's 5th highest peak with a Class 2 standard route from the South Fork Lake Creek Trailhead. Steep, sustained climb on a well-defined trail. One of the most accessible Sawatch 14ers.
Mount Belford and Mount Oxford
Classic Sawatch double 14er from the Missouri Gulch trailhead. Belford comes first, then a 600-foot drop and re-climb gets you Oxford. Some hikers add Missouri Mountain for a triple.
Missouri Mountain (Northwest Ridge)
Class 2 route from Missouri Gulch with a narrow but non-technical summit ridge. Often combined with Belford and Oxford for a triple 14er day from the same trailhead.
Huron Peak (Northwest Slopes)
Often called the most scenic Sawatch 14er. Class 1-2 route from the Huron Peak Trailhead through alpine meadows. Views of the Three Apostles (13ers) from the summit are spectacular.
Hiking in Leadville: what to know
Leadville is purpose-built for high-altitude training and 14er climbing. Mount Elbert (14,440 feet), Mount Massive (14,428 feet), La Plata Peak, and Mount Sherman are all within 30 minutes of town. The Leadville Trail 100 ultra runs through here annually.
Mount Elbert's standard Northeast Ridge route starts at the North Mount Elbert Trailhead, 12 miles southwest of town. The 9.5-mile round trip with 4,500 feet of gain is long but non-technical: a good first 14er for fit hikers. Read our Mount Elbert detail page before going.
Mount Massive is Colorado's second-highest peak and a slightly harder day (13.6 miles, 4,500 feet of gain) due to the longer summit ridge.
Mount Sherman (5.25 miles, 2,400 feet of gain) is the easiest 14er in the area and one of the easiest in Colorado, when access is open. Check trailhead conditions before driving out; private land disputes have affected access in past years.
For shorter local hikes, the Twin Lakes area (south of town) has shoreline trails and quick access to Independence Pass (open summer only).
Turquoise Lake, 10 minutes from town, has shoreline trails and easy lake access for casual day hikes.
Leadville's altitude is the unique factor. The town sits at 10,152 feet, which is higher than the summit of most ski resorts. Sleep here for a night before any 14er attempt; your body needs time to adjust. Symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, nausea, sleeplessness) are common even at town elevation for sea-level visitors. Read our altitude sickness guide.
Weather: Leadville's high altitude means cold nights even in midsummer (30-40°F overnight in July) and snow on the surrounding peaks late into June. Winter brings serious cold (regularly -20°F) and limited recreation options.
