Hiking in Leadville: what to know

Leadville is purpose-built for high-altitude training and 14er climbing. Mount Elbert (14,440 feet), Mount Massive (14,428 feet), La Plata Peak, and Mount Sherman are all within 30 minutes of town. The Leadville Trail 100 ultra runs through here annually.

Mount Elbert's standard Northeast Ridge route starts at the North Mount Elbert Trailhead, 12 miles southwest of town. The 9.5-mile round trip with 4,500 feet of gain is long but non-technical: a good first 14er for fit hikers. Read our Mount Elbert detail page before going.

Mount Massive is Colorado's second-highest peak and a slightly harder day (13.6 miles, 4,500 feet of gain) due to the longer summit ridge.

Mount Sherman (5.25 miles, 2,400 feet of gain) is the easiest 14er in the area and one of the easiest in Colorado, when access is open. Check trailhead conditions before driving out; private land disputes have affected access in past years.

For shorter local hikes, the Twin Lakes area (south of town) has shoreline trails and quick access to Independence Pass (open summer only).

Turquoise Lake, 10 minutes from town, has shoreline trails and easy lake access for casual day hikes.

Leadville's altitude is the unique factor. The town sits at 10,152 feet, which is higher than the summit of most ski resorts. Sleep here for a night before any 14er attempt; your body needs time to adjust. Symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, nausea, sleeplessness) are common even at town elevation for sea-level visitors. Read our altitude sickness guide.

Weather: Leadville's high altitude means cold nights even in midsummer (30-40°F overnight in July) and snow on the surrounding peaks late into June. Winter brings serious cold (regularly -20°F) and limited recreation options.
