Quandary Peak is the most popular first 14er in Colorado, drawing thousands of climbers each summer due to its short trail, gentle grade, and proximity to Breckenridge. The standard East Ridge route is a non-technical 6.75-mile walk-up.

Standard Route

The standard route starts at the McCullough Gulch Trailhead, about 6 miles south of Breckenridge. The trail climbs through pine forest before emerging onto open tundra on the east ridge. From there it's a steady, well-marked walk up to the summit at 14,271 feet. Total elevation gain: 3,450 feet over 3.4 miles each way.

What to Expect

Quandary is busy — expect 200+ climbers on a summer weekend. The mountain goats near the summit are habituated to people but should not be approached. Weather can shift fast; turn back if storms build before noon.

Access & Logistics

Summer parking at the McCullough Gulch trailhead requires a reservation through recreation.gov from June through October. Book 1-2 weeks ahead for weekends. Overflow parking is at the Blue River parking lot.

Gear Notes

Standard 14er kit: sturdy boots, trekking poles, rain shell, insulating layer, 2+ liters of water. Microspikes are recommended through July as snow lingers in shaded sections.
