Pikes Peak is one of the most iconic mountains in America — visible from Denver and the inspiration for 'America the Beautiful.' The Barr Trail to the summit is 26 miles round trip with 7,400 feet of gain, making it the longest standard-route 14er in Colorado.
Standard Route
The Barr Trail starts in Manitou Springs at 6,720 feet — the lowest 14er trailhead in Colorado, which is also why the climb is so long. The trail switchbacks through forest, crosses Barr Camp at 10,200 feet (a popular overnight stop), and climbs above treeline before reaching the summit visitor center.
What to Expect
Pikes is unique among 14ers in that you can drive or take the cog railway to the summit. Many climbers hike up and take the shuttle down to skip the brutal 13-mile descent. Plan for 10-14 hours of hiking; consider splitting it into two days with a stay at Barr Camp.
Access & Logistics
Manitou Springs trailhead has free parking but fills early. The summit road and cog railway are paid attractions. The Barr Trail itself is free year-round.
