Grays Peak is the most-summited 14er in Colorado, and for good reason: it's the closest 14er to Denver (under an hour's drive), the trail is well-graded, and you can summit two 14ers in one day by adding the connecting Torreys Peak ridge.
Standard Route
The standard route begins at the Grays Peak Trailhead at the end of Stevens Gulch Road, just off I-70 at Bakerville. From 11,280 feet, the trail climbs steadily up Grays' east side, gaining about 3,000 feet over 4 miles to the summit at 14,275 feet. The trail is well-defined the entire way.
What to Expect
Most climbers add Torreys Peak (560 feet of additional gain) for a two-summit day — drop to the Grays-Torreys saddle and climb the ridge. The whole loop is 8.5 miles. Start before 6 AM in summer; afternoon storms are reliable.
Access & Logistics
Stevens Gulch Road is rough but passable by 2WD with high clearance. After heavy rain it can be impassable — call the ranger station for current conditions.
