Mount Bierstadt is the easiest big-name 14er and a popular choice for first-timers. The standard West Slopes route is only 7 miles round trip with under 3,000 feet of gain — manageable in 4-6 hours for fit beginners.
Standard Route
The trail starts at Guanella Pass (11,669 feet), reached via paved road from Georgetown. From the trailhead, descend briefly into the willows of Scott Gomer Creek (notorious for biting flies), then climb steadily up the west slopes through open tundra to the summit at 14,060 feet.
What to Expect
Bierstadt is crowded — expect 400+ climbers on a summer weekend. The willow section can be muddy and buggy; long sleeves help. Sawtooth Ridge (class 3) connects Bierstadt to Mount Evans for advanced climbers willing to do the technical ridge.
Access & Logistics
Guanella Pass Road is fully paved and open year-round. No permit or reservation required, but parking fills by 6 AM on summer weekends.
