Mount Sherman is the shortest 14er in Colorado at 5.25 miles round trip and 2,400 feet of gain — when access is open. It's also one of the easiest, with the standard West Slope route a class 2 walk-up through old mining ruins.
Standard Route
From the Iowa Gulch trailhead, the trail follows an old mining road past abandoned cabins and mine workings before climbing the west slope to a broad saddle. The summit is a short ridge walk from the saddle.
What to Expect
Access has been intermittent due to private mining-claim issues. Check 14ers.com or the Colorado Mountain Club for current access status before driving out. The route is fully exposed above treeline.
Access & Logistics
Iowa Gulch Trailhead access requires a high-clearance vehicle. Private property closures have impacted access in past years.
