Mount Democrat is the first summit of the Decalibron loop and the one most often climbed on its own, a short Class 2 climb from Kite Lake that opens earlier in the season than most fourteeners. It is also the first peak to turn people around, because its saddle is where the loop's weather and altitude first show.
Standard Route
From Kite Lake at 12,000 feet, follow the trail north past the lake and up switchbacks to the Democrat-Cameron saddle at 13,400 feet. Turn west and climb Democrat's northeast slope on a rocky trail with a few short talus steps to the summit at 14,155 feet. Democrat alone is about 4 miles round trip and 2,150 feet of gain; the full Decalibron loop from the saddle is about 7.5 miles and 3,700 feet.
What to Expect
The slope above the saddle is loose in places and holds snow later than the rest of the loop, since it faces north and east. The summit has a wide view over the Mosquito Range and Leadville to the Sawatch. Democrat by itself is a modest day; the reason to be here is the loop, and most people who reach the saddle in good weather keep going to Cameron and Lincoln.
Access & Logistics
Kite Lake is 6 miles above Alma on Park County Road 8, gravel and fine for passenger cars in dry conditions. Day-use fee at the lot, which fills by 5 AM on summer weekends. Sign the Town of Alma's free online waiver before hiking the loop, and check whether any section is closed.
When to Climb
Democrat is climbable from about mid-June, once the road opens, and is in its best condition from July through early October. Early-season climbers should expect snow on the trail above the saddle and carry microspikes. In winter Democrat is one of the more approachable Mosquito peaks, but the road closes at Alma and the approach adds miles.
Storms build early over the range. Be on the summit by 9 or 10 AM in July and August.
Camping, Permits, and Nearby
The Kite Lake campground has walk-in tent sites, a toilet, and no reservations. Alma and Fairplay have food, gas, and lodging within 20 minutes. Because the trailhead is at 12,000 feet, spending a night in Fairplay or Leadville first makes a real difference for people coming from low elevation.
