San Luis Peak is the most remote 14er in Colorado, requiring a long drive on dirt roads through the La Garita Wilderness. The standard route is an easy class 2 ridge walk, but the approach takes most of a day.
Standard Route
From the Stewart Creek Trailhead, the trail follows Stewart Creek through wide meadows before climbing the broad northwest ridge to the summit. 13.5 miles round trip, 3,600 feet of gain.
What to Expect
San Luis is mellow climbing in remote country — the kind of day where you may not see another climber. Wildlife sightings (elk, bighorn) are common. The trailhead is hours from any town.
